Featured Article: The top 100 fantasy listens of all time

When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

The magic schools with sorting hats that divide students into different classifications according to their gifts... books... (in this case it's a sorting vat of magic water that you dip your hand into) are all too common at this point. - That said, this is in the top 5% of those... most of which I'm happy to close and dismiss entirely once they become sophomoric and/or whiny imitations of their superior. - This doesn't fall into that trap, and it really forges in a direction that could become its own voice. So I pledge to buy the remainder of the series and give them a listen.

Standard in nearly too many ways, but well done.

I hadn't heard about this book but listened to it on a reccomendation from the end of Andrew Rowe's On The Shoulders of Titans. I am blown away. This must be up in my top 3 ongoing fantasy series right with Stormlight Archive and Arcane Ascension. I am quite excited to read more!

As other reviews have stated this series is a "page turner". The first book starts off a little slow but really picks up ~1/3 of the way into it. However once it does pickup it does at a run and does not stop and I mean it does not stop at all. The pace this story moves is kept through every subsequent book and this is the biggest strength of this series. The pacing in each book and how the author keeps that going from one book to the next really allows you to stay engaged throughout the entire story so far. You are always invested in the conflict that is going on and the conflict that is on the horizon. The story and characters are interesting and fun but the pacing is really the strength here to the point where if it was to slow down I do feel that the story would really suffer for it as it is that break neck, action packed events that allows you to sit back and enjoy being swept along.

The narrator is awesome he did a great job in making each of the characters sound unique. I enjoyed him so much that I have started looking at other books he has narrated.

Power level 5000!

Be careful when picking up this book, it's a 55 hour or so listen (you will want to listen to all the books) that you won't want to put down. If you enjoy the stakes getting higher, I recommend it highly.

you are going to want the series.

My new "Red Rising". So happy I picked this up, and off to spend some credits on the rest of the series!

Fantastic.

If you like the cultivation genre or you want to try it out I sincerely recommend this series! Also listen to the bloopers that are at the end of some of the later books.

I really like this series!

(No Spoilers) I have heard a lot about this series, mainly that it's addictive and fun, and this first installment lived up to the hype. Not a perfect book, but the equivalent of a good anime action movie or TV show. I'm reminded of Avatar: The Last Airbender in some ways.

THE GOOD

Who doesn't like rooting for the Underdog? As a rare person born without magic, the main character is treated as less than human by his society, which is very clan based Japanese feudal era-esque. In fact, this reads like a smashup of an anime/manga and LitRPG, and I can't say I don't enjoy the combination of elements. The entire world is obsessed with increasing their skill in their chosen "path" and developing new techniques (manga/anime) and the increases in skill/power are very regimented and measurable (LitRPG). Most of the fun of the series is seeing how the protagonist will outsmart his vastly stronger opponents and manage to progress despite being severely limited.

Hard Magic? I do enjoy hard magic systems, and the system of magic in these books is pretty complicated. If you like that sort of thing, there is a lot to sink your teeth (imagination) into. One gripe would be that although there are clearly a lot of rules, they aren't always explained well, and I'm left not really understanding why some things work the way they do. Presumably this will be addressed in future volumes.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

Clunky: There are a lot of clunky aspects to the book, as the pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it slows down to a crawl, and the dialogue is nothing to write home about. The prose as well is just "there" i.e. this is not a very quotable book, no great lines. But ultimately none of that got in the way of my enjoyment.

Characterization: I found most of the characters to be painted in broad strokes, with one defining feature each. For instance the main character is basically just pure determination on legs. I couldn't really tell you more about his personality. The reason I'm rooting for the character is not due to his personality so much as my investment in his journey. There are certainly worse criticisms to be leveled at a book, but I'm hoping the characterization will improve in future installments.

THE VERDICT

Despite some issues, this book was super entertaining and addictive enough to overlook its small flaws. I have a feeling those may improve as the series goes along, considering that as of this writing there are 9 books.

I read a lot of sci-fi/ fantasy (40 to 60 a year) and this one is a delight. It’s a great start to a hero’s journey. It reminds me of blend of the tv show Avatar the Last Air Bender crossed with Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera. Don’t get me wrong. This is a very unique story with well crafted characters. I am already looking forwards to book two.
PS. Give the narrator a chance. It took me about two chapters to realize just how much work Travis Baldeee put into it. After that I began to enjoy it. Now I can’t imagine the book without him! It’s more a performance than a strict reading.

Will Wight isn't just one of the best fantasy indie authors out there. He's one of best fantasy authors period and can hang with anyone backed by a big publishing house. What I really appreciate about his writing is that he doesn't waste words, sentences, scenes or chapters. Everything counts. There's no rambling, no snore inducing lulls in the story. He's concise, yet still provides ample character development, back story and seamless perspective changes.

The Cradlle series is an addictive listen. It has the feel of an anime but with the depth of a great book. The characters are stark and unique, and the plot is killer. Travis Baldree brings the story and characters to life flawlessly. Please note that I'm not a huge fan of fantasy, anime or one genre. I just love good books, especially a good series. This one is awesome.
